The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is considering the possibility of moving part of the campus to downtown Oshawa. This would take place with the fall semester in 2008.
There is a space issue that has to be resolved for the start of fall classes. Rather than build a new building on campus, the university is looking at the possibility of renting some space off campus.
There have been discussions with some property owners, some locations downtown and some elsewhere in Oshawa.
UOIT officials have toured the Regent Theatre, Genosha Hotel and former Scotiabank building on Simcoe Street. They are under consideration for possible off campus sites.
The owner of the former Scotiabank building has expressed interest in having UOIT as a tenant. However, plans are underway to convert the building into a hotel.
Mayor John Gray is excited that the downtown is being considered, as students would use stores and restaurants. He also stated that it might mean a new tenant for a building that has been standing vacant.
