Most feel that Oshawa's downtown is a dangerous place for the public. But is this true?
The police sergeant that heads the unit that patrols the downtown core says it is not true. He claims that there are no crime statistics that support this perception.
Since Oshawa has a small downtown, incidents can be blown out of proportion. Like any urban area, there will be crimes. He claims that major incidents are quite rare. The Durham Regional Police conduct regular patrols to combat problems such as prostitution and drug trafficking.
The new GM Centre which holds various events, is helping to bring more visitors to the downtown area. The police sustain a presence that helps control criminal activity. Citizens and visitors should not fear of venturing into downtown Oshawa.
